Abraham Lincoln: John Rogers "Council of War" Statue Albumen Photograph. Albumen measures 6 1/4" x 8 5/8", and 9 5/8" x 12 1/4" overall. Mount is titled "The Council of War, Entered according to Act of Congress in the 1868, by John Rogers, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court for the Southern District of New York, Published by H. Wood, Jr., 639 Broadway, New York, Photographed by Soule". General Grant is pointing out some features of a map to the President while Secretary of War Stanton looks on. First introduced in 1867, the work proved so popular that three versions were produced over a number of years. Robert Todd Lincoln admired it greatly, with Stanton also commenting: "In form and feature it surpasses any effort to embody the expression of that great man which I have seen. The whole group is very natural and the work, like others from the same hand, well represents interesting incidents of the time." This image does appear in a stereoview format, but this is the first example of a large albumen being offered at auction that we know of.

Condition

Some edge wear to the mount, light rub on albumen at extreme left edge. Toning on verso from previous framing. The albumen has excellent tone and detail, and would make a beautiful presentation when matted and framed.
