ADDAMS, Charles (1912 - 1988). Hearse scene New Yorker cartoon, and three letters. 1963-8. Ink and watercolor illustration on paper. Signed to the lower left, inscribed in the lower right margin. Original illustration by the cartoonist and creator of the Addams Family. Depicts a hearse entering a graveyard, with a large white egg chained to the coffin seen inside. Published in the July 27, 1963, issue of The New Yorker in "The Talk of the Town" section without a caption.
Along with the original artwork, the lot includes three handwritten letters from Addams to Chester Morris, dated June 1963 through March 1968. Letters chronicle Morris' idea for this illustration, along with a follow-up letter confirming it will appear in print, and a third letter, dated a few years later. It appeared that the two had regular communication and Morris often had ideas for the illustrator.
