Addressed: "My dear friend" and signed "[?] Jane Addams". Approximately 9 1/2 x 5 3/4". A bit toned, creased, with two horizontal creases. Fine. "Your check and dear letter came to hand and I am heartie [?] grateful for both of them. We had a reception for Alder [?] yesterday evening. I gave him your message and he said that he would ... [?]..." 

Addams was a prominent settlement activist, social reformer, philosopher, suffragette, and author. She co-founded Hull-House, the most famous Chicago settlement house which provided services to the poor and indigent. She was the first social worker in the United States, and was the first woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931.
