[296], [16, ads] pp. Publisher's full beige cloth, boards and spine decoratively stamped in colors (some rubbing, toning, light soiling to binding, front hinge starting, text lightly toned). Near fine. FIRST EDITION. With a gift inscription to Isabella [Sayre] on the ffep. Laid-in is an early silver gelatin photographic print of “Rebecca Porter" an elderly African-American woman and former slave, the basis of the “Mom Beck" character in the Little Colonel books (the inscribed caption on the photo by the author is a facsimile in the print). Also laid-in are two autograph letters from the family of Sayre asking for more information about Porter. The Little Colonel series was a popular series of children's books about a household in the Reconstruction era in the South (the first book was the basis of The Little Colonel film, starring Shirley Temple and Bill “Bojangles" Robinson). This book is the ninth of the series.
