Ambrose Burnside: Signed Stock Certificate. Indianapolis and Vincennes Railroad Co. stock certificate for 1,000 shares, dated April 28, 1869, and signed by company president Ambrose Burnside. Burnside (1824-1881), once Commander of the Army of the Potomac, is best remembered for his catastrophic routs at Fredericksburg and The Battle of the Crater after replacing McClellan. In addition to serving as president of the Indianapolis and Vincennes Railroad, his post-Civil War career included terms as president of the Cincinnati and Martinsville Railroad, Cairo and Vincennes Railroad, and the Rhode Island Locomotive Works, of which state he was also the three-time Governor.
