Strauss was one of the founders of the United States Atomic Energy Commission under Truman, and had advocated for the atomic bombs to be used on a symbolic target as a warning, instead of dropping them on Japanese cities. He was denied the position of Commerce Secretary due to various in-fighting, and controversies. Of note, he was portrayed by Robert Downey, Jr. in the 2023 film, Oppenheimer, for which Downey won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
