[ARTIST'S BOOK]. FRASCONI, Antonio (1919-2013). Sounds of the Night: The American Indian and the Owl. [South Norwalk, Winter 1994-1995]. Folio. Approximately 9 1/2 x 12". Twelve leaves of color woodcuts and xylographic text in brown. Full-age portrait (head) of a Native American in earth tones faces a full-page owl in purple and black, followed by seven double-page spreads of a poem and an owl, concluding with a double-page spread of the land and sky at night. In publisher's full color wrap-around cover and slipcase (slipcase covered with an additional woodcut, xylographic label). FIRST EDITION THUS, ONE OF ONLY TEN COPIES SIGNED ("9/10") BY FRASCONI ON HOSHO AND ARCHES PAPER WITH BROWN HOSHO ENDLEAVES.

Earth tones represent the Native Americans, contrasting with nighttime colors of deep purple, black and silver. Frasconi's books are overprinted, adding layer upon layer of color, giving the prints a three-dimensional quality. Frasconi was one of the most prominent woodcut artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, winning a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1952, as well as many other accolades.
