Several intertextual woodcuts, 50 volvelles (including 16 volvelles with 2 discs or pointers, and one volvelle with 3 discs or pointers), and approximately 137 intertextual woodcuts (not including the numerous head-, tail-pieces, initials, and the publisher's engraved centaur motif on the title-page), one loose disc. [xvi], 1-478, 44 [sic, Liber VIII]-57 [sic, Liber VIII]. Liber VIII leaves inserted at rear. Contemporary full vellum over limp boards (binding worn, soiled, worm damage to endleaves and numerous text leaves with some loss of text or imagery, p. [ix] torn at inner margin, contemporary ownership signature on ffep., ink notations crossed-out on title-page, volvelles generally worn, toned (and possibly supplied), a few volvelles or pointers with tears or missing pieces, with small covering pieces of the central axis pieces of the volvelles on the versos, two volvelles (p. 157 and 165) are facsimiles, volvelle on p. 195 has later ink restoration, several gutters overopened or starting, p. 44 of Liber VIII is partially loose, p. 47/48 of Liber VIII is missing the lower corner, Liber VIII is worn, soiled, with ink notes). This copy has the unsigned leaf (p. 280) showing the constellation Cepheus. Good.THE SCARCE FIRST EDITION OF AN IMPORTANT RENAISSANCE STAR ATLAS WITH COPERNICAN COORDINATES. The inserted Liber VIII has tracking information and coordinates for Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus Mercury, and the Sun and the Moon. "There are 48 woodcut maps of the Ptolemaic constellations, each of which is preceded by a catalogue of the included stars identifying position within the constellation, latitude and longitude (in degrees and minutes), magnitude, and nature. ... The longitudes on?Gallucci's catalog and on his map are those published by Copernicus in De Revolutionibus (1543)" (Warner).?This atlas was quite popular and had several reprintings. Adams G166.
