[AUTOMATA]. Wonderful Talking Machine. [London, ca. 1844]. Attractive letterpress handbill advertising Faber's miraculous speaking mechanism (outfitted with the face of a comely lass) at the Palais Royal, Oxford Circus W. 10 x 5". Dawes label to verso, else very good. Together with a clipped engraving offering another view of the machine, but in a slightly different form and under its other name ?Euphonia."It has been said that Alexander Graham Bell was inspired in his work on the telephone by Farber's talking machine. The device was operated by its inventor using a combination of keyboard-like device and large bellows to imitate human speech. The machine was exhibited by Barnum, among other showmen.
