Benjamin Meads: Black Civil War Veteran Archive Regarding Enslaved Man. Three documents concerning Benjamin Meads of the 30th United States Colored Troops and his participation in the Civil War. The first manuscript is a 7 x 7 3/4" hand-written note from the Office Co. Commissioners of Talbot Co. MD. testifying that "Benj. Meads of Co. 'G' 30th U.S.C.T. has been claimed as the slave (at the time of enlistment) of Robt. H. Perry, and that the Commissioners allowed the claim as good and true..." The second manuscript is one-page 8 1/2 x 10 1/2" signed document dated June 19, 1865, with the signature of adjutant 1st Lt. Charles B. Sanders, certifying Mead's services and assigning him an attorney. On the reverse is a hand-written inscription with the note: "Benj. Meads is returned as a freed man and $250 in the hands of Co. Commers of Talbot Co. If they have paid him nothing please send certification from them to that effect." Pasted to the bottom of this document is a signed promissory note for $50 "payable for enlistment and muster of the above named Benjamin Meads (slave)." An interesting Civil War archive.
