BENNETT, Sanford Fillmore (American, 1836-1898). Bound volume of S. Fillmore Bennett?s personally owned sheet music. V.p., 1857-68 (principally 1866-7). Folio. Collection/sammelband of sheet music, song lyricist Sanford Fillmore Bennett?s own personal volume, including compositions by Joseph P. Webster, with whom Bennett is best remembered for writing the text to the hymn ?In the Sweet By and By.? 33 compositions together, including four Bennett/Webster compositions and over a dozen others by Webster with other lyricists (including the post-Civil War song of emancipation ?Protect the Freedman?). Includes eight compositions by L.O. Emerson (1820-1915) with presentation inscriptions to Bennett in graphite. Most Webster compositions published by Lyon & Healy (Chicago), one by Root & Cady (Chicago), all of which are pre-Fire imprints. Compositions retain engraved upper title wrappers. Also with Boston, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis publishers. Nineteenth century quarter leather, cloth sides, with gilt-stamped ownership label to upper cover. (Intermittent foxing and offsetting.)
