This text is interspersed with poems in terza rima, after the example of Boethius and Dante's Vita Nuova. Written in 1341-1342, while Boccaccio was in Florence caring for his elderly father and separated from hsi beloved Fiammetta in Naples, this work is about the civilizing influence of love, the pastoral framework of this piece strongly influenced subsequent Arcadian literature.
