[BOVA, Ben (1932-2020). The Winston Juvenile Science Fiction Series, Complete Set of 37 Volumes. Philadelphia and Toronto: The John C. Winston Co., 1952-1961. 8vos. Publisher's original bindings, illustrated endpapers by Alex Schomburg with original first printing dust jackets (proper titles listed). ALL EXCELLENT FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTINGS; 'STAR CONQUERORS' SIGNED BY BEN BOVA ON THE TITLE PAGE.
Conceived by editor Cecile Matschat and Donald A. Wollheim, the 37-volume series stands as the landmark post-war American juvenile science-fiction publishing effort, commissioning original Y.A. novels from genre titans including Arthur C. Clarke, Jack Vance, Poul Anderson, Ben Bova, and Lester del Rey. The series became famous for its iconic illustrative jackets and pulp science-fiction designs, featuring universal endpapers from Alex Schomburg along with dust jackets from premier space/pulp artists such as Chesley Bonestell, Ed Emshwiller, Virgil Finlay, and Schomburg. Complete sets of all 37 titles in trade bindings are rare; heavy institutional adoption led to widespread ex-library attrition, trimmed jackets, and loss.
