Gates was one of Arkansas? best known yellow pine manufacturers and one of the most expert woodsman and estimators in the Southwest as he was known to have ?spent many weeks in the woods, much of the time of foot? (American Lumberman 1905, pp. 403?406). His affinity for nature probably attracted that of Mr. Burroughs who was an American naturalist and nature essayist capturing his own unique perceptions of the natural world.
