Randian was a sideshow performer born in British Guyana and brought to the United States in 1889 by P.T. Barnum. He worked in carnivals and circuses for over 40 years, and appeared in Tod Browning's Freaks in which he performed his routine of opening a matchbox, striking a match, and lighting a cigarette with his mouth.
