[CARROLL, Lewis (pseudonym of DODGSON, Charles Lutwidge (1832-1898)), association]. MANKIEWICZ, Joseph L. (1909-1993). Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass... Screen Play by Joseph L. Mankiewicz... [Hollywood: Paramount Pictures, 1933].  Folio. Profusely illustrated throughout (642 illustrations) by co-writer William Cameron Menzies. Mimeographed, as issued. [10], 646 pp. Rectos only, on peach-colored paper. Original plain brown wrappers over olive-green cloth backstrip. THE SCARCE FIRST EDITION OF THIS SCREENPLAY FOR THE 1933 FILM DIRECTED BY NORMAN Z. MCLEOD AND PRODUCED BY LOUIS D. LIGHTON; PREVIOUSLY OWNED BY CAST MEMBER, BABY LEROY.

This limited edition screenplay (the number of copies printed is unknown, but may be around 40 or so, presumably reserved for cast or crew members), was originally from the personal collection of Baby LeRoy (Ronald Le Roy Overacker, 1932-2001), who played the "Joker" in this film.

This version of Alice in Wonderland was a pre-code, live-action version of Carroll's fantasy. It remains the only live-action theatrical version of Alice. This version was a bit too surrealistic for audiences, and struggled at the box office, despite an all-star cast. Cast members included: Gary Cooper, Cary Grant, Sterling Holloway, Edward Everett Horton, LeRoy, and LeRoy's frequent co-star (and nemesis), W. C. Fields.

LeRoy was the youngest (16 months old) actor to be put under a term contract to a major studio. Although he made several films, his most famous film appearances were opposite W. C. Fields. Fields was famous for disliking babies and children, LeRoy in particular, as he felt he was upstaged by the talented toddler. Fields infamously mistreated LeRoy, cursing at him, kicking him on film, and, according to Groucho Marx, got LeRoy drunk, halting production for several days on a film they were working on.

Condition

Front wrapper loose (yet present), wrappers edgeworn with tears and chps, some soiling, wear, to backstrip, first two leaves loose (yet present), upper corner of text creased, some edgewear to first few and final few leaves, occasional minor soiling. Very good.
