[Civil Rights]: Press Photo of Charles Weems, one of the Scottsboro Boys. 1933. Silver gelatin press photograph. Hand-stamp of Acme Newspictures, Inc. to verso, with mimeographed caption snipe dated 4/10/33 and N.E.A. Ref. Dept. hand-stamp dated Apr. 18 1933.

8 x 6".

Weems was one of nine African American teenagers accused of raping two white women in 1931 in Alabama. Weems and all but one of the other defendants were convicted and sentenced to death by all-white juries with poor legal representation. The Supreme Court reversed the convictions in 1932. Weems was re-tried and convicted in 1937 and sentenced to 75 years, then was paroled in 1943. He received a presumably posthumous pardon in 2013.
