[CIVIL WAR]. BUTLER, Benjamin Franklin (1818-1893). Secretarial Letter Signed by Butler. Head-Quarters 18th Army Corps, Department of Virginia & North Carolina, Fortress Monroe, November 28, 1863. Addressed ?Dear Sir,? to J. Q. A. Griffin, Esq., Charlestown [sic]. Body of letter is in an unknown secretarial hand, but is signed by Butler at the end. One and one-fourth 4to pages on one folding folio leaf of 18th Army Corps ruled stationery. Each page approximately 10 x 8?. Vertical and horizontal creases, some offsetting, light soiling. Fine. ?... A Judge Advocate is a prosecuting officer of a Court Martial - You know too much for one. You need not thank me at all. I was in the Secretary of War?s Office and he asked me if I knew a good Lawyer to make a Judge Advocate, I said yes, named you and he said he would appoint you?? Butler was a Union general and later a congressman and governor of Massachusetts.
