Byers was a Union soldier from Iowa; he was captured at the Battle of Missionary Ridge and spent nearly 2 years in Confederate prisons. It was during this time he heard about Sherman's March to the Sea and the capture of Atlanta; he was inspired to write his famous poem, "Sherman's March to the Sea," coining this famous term (this poem is contained in In Arcadia - a later printed appearance of this poem). After the war, he wrote poetry and prose, and eventually became the American Consul to Switzerland.
