Spaulding (Company B 10th Maine Volunteers) of contemporary full black diamond-sculpted binding boards stamped and ruled in gilt, spine stamped in blind and gilt, four raised bands, patterned endleaves, all edges gilt (rebacked, preserving most of the original spine, light edgewear to boards, hinges reinforced, text a bit toned with occasional minor soiling, light edgewear to endleaves). Fine. FIRST EDITION IN A SPECIAL CUSTOM BINDING FOR A MEMBER OF THE MAINE VOLUNTEERS, WHO HELPED PRINT THIS TITLE. Laid-in are two sheets (on ruled paper) with hand-written (in an unknown contemporary hand) ?Roll of the Dead of the 10th Maine Regiment" (some toning, minor edgewear). From a pencil note on the front blank: ?An unusual copy of this scarce regimental history. It was the personal copy and especially bound for Albert S. Spaulding (Co. B. 10th Maine Vols.), who supervised the production of the book as foreman for Stephen Berry, the Portland printer." On the colophon, in pencil (unknown hand): ?This was Spaulding's Copy, especially bound for him." ??
