Civil War: Pair of Anti-Confederate Civil War Song Sheets. Printed by Quipps & Co., Comic Miscellany, Pennsylvania. The company started in 1847 and printed several types of broadsides and handouts. These were distributed by newsmen and boys both before and during the Civil War. These song sheets, with a blank reverse, are c. 1861, and have crude, yet intriguing woodcut images at the top. The first song sheet measures 3 ½” x 13 ¾” and is titled “The Famous Retreat of the Southern Rebels”. It pictures woodcut images of Confederates running or retreating from the Union Army, as a bayonet is seen at the left edge. It reads, in part: “About the “Cotton Heroes”, a tale I will relate, A thing that Lately happened in old Virginny State: The soldiers of Secession were wakened in the night And found to their amazement they had a chance to fight….”. The second song sheet measures 3 ¼’ x 15 ¼” and is titled “Physic For Traitors!” It pictures a woodcut of possibly Confederate Jefferson Davis, as it reads in part: “Come, spin a strong rope for Jeff Davis, and a couple for Yancey and Rhett (For each a detestable knave is.) Nor Pickens nor Stephens forget. Have a cord for old false – hearted Pillow….”.
