Civil War Period Wooden ?Battle Rattle?/Alarm Signal. Oft used aboard ship and, in some cases, in camp, to, in essence, sound ?general quarters.? Constructed entirely of oak. Turning the handle activates a toothed gear that ?clicks? against a flexible piece of wood creating a loud 'alarm'. Length 10 ??. Old label affixed to body.
