[CIVIL WAR]. STEVENS, Judge John W. Reminiscences of the Civil War. A Soldier in Hood's Texas Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. Hillsboro, TX: Hillsboro Mirror Print, 1902. 8vo. Frontispiece portrait of Stevens. 213, [15, blank] pp. Publisher's full light blue cloth, boards stamped in blind, front board and spine stamped in gilt (spine toned and soiled, some edgewear, soiling to boards, hinges starting, text toned and occasionally soiled, a few gutters starting, one binding cord a bit loose between pages 176-177, some ink of the printed pages a bit smeared). Still, a fine copy, much better than generally seen. FIRST EDITION OF THIS RARE AND VALUABLE ACCOUNT OF HOOD'S BRIGADE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE CIVIL WAR. Stevens participated in Lee's defeat of McClellan in Virginia, the battles of Fredricksburg, Chancellorville, and Little Round Top. He was eventually captured and spent the latter portion of the war in Union prisons. Of some interest is the latter portion of the book, entitled, ?An Analysis of the Negro Problem as a Result of the War", which contains his thoughts on race relations after the war, and his disdain for freed slaves (he accuses them of all kinds of heinous crimes.) From the renowned personal collection of Dr. George D. Lacy. Measurements: 10 x 7 x 1".
