Original publisher?s half pigskin, marbled sides, black and red leather lettering?pieces gilt, gilt tooling compartments, all edges marbled (light rubbing to extremities, a bit of wear to spine). Provenance: F.P. Monfort (book label); later pencil inscriptions. FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE, Intermediate A, with the tail-piece on p. 441 depicting an urn, flames and the head of Twain, and the caption on p. 443 reading ?The St. Charles Hotel.?
