Originally published in three parts by Blackwood?s Magazine from February-April 1899 to celebrate the magazine?s thousandth issue, Heart of Darkness was written based in part off of Conrad?s own experiences commanding a Belgian steamer on the Congo River after its captain became ill. Though the novella received little notice during Conrad?s lifetime, it began to receive a critical reappraisal after Orson Welles and his Mercury Theatre adapted the story into a 1938 radio play which reimagined it as depicting the rise of a fascist dictator. In 1979 Francis Ford Coppola reinterpreted the story again, this time in a harrowing critique of the Vietnam War, Apocalypse Now.
