COOLIDGE, Calvin (1872-1933). Inscribed Photograph. [Washington, D. C.: Harris & Ewing, ca. 1920s]. Silver gelatin portrait of Coolidge, inscribed by him at the lower margin: ?To Mrs William C Sproul With best wishes Calvin Coolidge". On card stock. Total size 12 ? x 8 ?". Toned, some silvering at lower edge of portrait. Fine. Mrs. Sproul (Emeline) was the wife of William Cameron Sproul (1870-1928), who was the Republican Governor of Pennsylvania from 1919 to 1923. Sproul had been offered the Vice-Presidential nomination under Warren G. Harding in 1920, which he declined - this nomination was then offered to Coolidge, who accepted it. Coolidge became President when Harding died in 1923, and was re-elected as President in 1924. An interesting association.
