DARWIN, Charles (1809-1882). The Variation of Animals and Plants Under Domestication... Authorized Edition, with a Preface by Professor Asa Gray. New York: Orange Judd & Company, [1868]. 8vos, Illustrated. 2 volumes. 494, [6, ads]; 568, [8, ads] pp. Publisher's full green cloth, boards double-ruled in blind, spines lettered in gilt, brown coated endleaves. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION OF DARWIN'S LENGTHY WORK ON PANGENESIS.

"One of Darwin's most influential and wide-ranging books..." (Freeman, 879).  Pangenesis was Darwin's theory that all body cells emit hereditary particles called "gemmules." This theory was designed to explain heredity, but was rejected, and later replaced by genetic science and DNA research.

Condition

Some edgewear and short tears to spine edges, spines toned, some rubbing, soiling to boards, corners a bit bumped, gutter facing title-page of volume I cracked, text a bit toned. Very good.
