DICKENS, Charles (1812-1870). Oliver Twist. London: Richard Bentley, 1838. 8vos. Illustrated with 24 plates by George Cruikshank. 3 volumes. 331, [3, later ads, as issued]; 307; 315 pp. Volumes I and II with half-titles (volume III not issued with half-title, but volume III in this copy lacks the ads). Nineteenth-century half tan calf over marbled boards, spines ruled, tooled in gilt in compartments, two dark brown gilt morocco lettering labels, five raised bands, top edges gilt, marbled endleaves. FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, SECOND ISSUE, WITH THE AUTHOR'S NAME ON THE TITLE-PAGES (instead of "Boz") and the "Rose, Maylie, and Oliver" plate instead of the "Fireside" plate at the end of volume III. Dickens complained about having "Boz" on the title-pages and the "Fireside" plate, so corrected (second issue) copies were published a week after the first issue.
Condition
Some moderate wear, soiling, bumping to bindings, text and plates toned, occasionally soiled, foxed, a few pages with marginal tears, faint ownership signatures (erased?) on the half-titles in volumes I and II. Very good.
