DOYLE, Sir Arthur Conan (1859-1930). Autograph Letter Signed [and:] The Refugees... Letter is one and one-half small 8vo pages on one folding 8vo sheet of Doyle's stationery ("12, Tennison Road, South Norwood") and is dated "Feb 7th 7 93." Addressed "My dear Sir" to an unspecified editor (possibly Andrew Lang). Signed on p. [2], "Yours very truly A Conan Doyle". In this letter, Doyle, discusses some story points for The Refugees A Tale of Two Continents. Excerpts: "I think the Recollet must stand, or he might be a Friar of some other order, but not a Jesuit, for I have drawn two Jesuit types in the book, Pere la Chaise at Paris + the missionary in the woods. All Catholics were pretty bigotted at that time [tear is here, no loss of text], + the Recollets must have had some vicious folk among them. I don't mind about the Indian attack either. They attacked in the true Indian way until they thought the garrison were very weak, and then (knowing that help might come down the river) they rushed the stockade..." [And:] Ibid. The Refugees. A Tale of Two Continents. London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1893. 8vos. 24 pp. of ads at the rear of volume I. Three volumes. Condition
Letter is toned, soiled, each page has one horizontal and one vertical crease, there is a small circular tear on p. [1] only lightly affecting the text (no loss), the two pages are glued together at the left margin, and there is a note on the verso of p. [2]: "Doyle, A Conan Feb 7.93" in an unknown hand (possibly Lang's). Very good. The Refugees: spines toned, light wear to spine edges and corners, a few gutter mildly overopened. A fine set, better than usually seen.
