DUCROW SR., Andrew. Mr. Ducrow?s Performance from the Theatre Royal, Lisbon. Circa 1798. Poster advertises the acrobatic and slack-wire show of Ducrow, likely the father of the celebrated equestrian performer. Twelve wood-engraved images show Ducrow jumping through flaming barrels, fiddling while seated at a table on a slack wire, balancing wagon wheels on his forehead, and other miraculous feats. 21 ? x 17 ??. Contemporary notes to the verso in ink bear the date of 1799, those these appear to be unrelated to the poster or its use. Old folds with tiny losses at intersections, chips and stains. RARE.Little is known of Ducrow Sr., a Belgian strongman and showman. His son Andrew was born in 1793 and was trained by his father on the slack wire and as an equestrian. It was in the latter role he excelled, inventing many marvelous feats. Ducrow Jr. went on to fame and fortune as a remarkable horseman and as the proprietor of Astley?s amphitheater in London.
