DUNSANY, Lord (Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, 18th Baron Dunsany, 1878-1957). Jorkens Has a Large Whiskey. London: Putnam, 1940. 8vo. 323 pp. Publisher's blue-green cloth stamped gilt in original unclipped dust jacket. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING OF DUNSANY'S SCARCE THIRD VOLUME OF JORKENS TALES.
Joseph Jorkens (often just "Jorkens") first appeared in "The Tale of the Abu Laheeb" in The Atlantic Monthly in 1926 and went on to become the subject of more than 150 of Dunsany's stories. This volume is Dunsany's third collection of Jorkens tales, preceded by The Travel Tales of Mr. Joseph Jorkens and Jorkens Remembers Africa. The "large whiskey" in the title is the narrative device which repeatedly impels Jorkens to share with the narrator. "This whiskey, by stimulating the memory of Mr. Jorkens, has brought to light some unusual data that were not only forgotten otherwise by Mr. Jorkens himself, but were unknown in several instances to all the rest of the world."
