SAINT, Edward (1891 - 1942). Portrait of Saint at Coney Island. Circa 1910. Full-length sepia tone image shows Saint seated on stage as part of the Coney Island sideshow, the hand-painted banner behind him lettered with the text, "Our Feature / Sir Edward St. Ra-Diem / The International Smileless Man. With lengthy inked caption to verso (partially obscured by scrapbook remnants). Sir Edward will marry the girl who can make him smile." Captioned in ink in the lower margin, likely by Saint himself. 6 1/2 x 5". Two chips to image, one corner clipped, stained. Regardless, an early image of Saint and a very evocative picture of the heyday of the Coney Island sideshow. Provenance: Collection of Beatrice Houdini, passed to the consignor by descent.
