EINSTEIN, Albert (1879-1955). Typed Letter Signed. Princeton, NJ, January 14, 1943. Addressed ?My dear Dr. Salzer:" (addressed to Dr. Benjamin Salzer). Text in English. On Einstein's personal stationery, with embossed address at top, and watermark. Signed ?A. Einstein". Approximately 11 x 8 ?". Two vertical and one horizontal creases, toned, soiled, with a few short tears at creases. Very good. ?I am very sorry that the poor state of my health does not permit me to attend the dinner in honor of Mr. Wendell Willkie. I regret this all the more as I admire keenly the sincerety [sic] and courage of Mr. Willkie's public utterances which seem to me most meritorious and helpful in the present situation." Wendell Willkie (1892-1944) was an attorney and politician, who, later in life, favored the advancement of civil rights, and defended Jews against those who blamed them for the United States' involvement in the war. It is obvious why Einstein would support him. Dr. Salzer (not to be confused with Dr. Herbert Salzer, who famously corrected some of Einstein's math) was Willkie's personal physician. From the renowned personal collection of Dr. George D. Lacy.Measurements: 11"L x 9"W x 1"H.
