Boston: Russell, Shattuck, and Co., 1836. 12mo. 2 wood?engraved plates including frontispiece (juvenile hand?coloring to frontise). Early gilt?lettered cloth (extreme ends worn, corners rubbed, marginal browning and offsetting to text). FIRST EDITION. ?Holden, a farm boy from New Hampshire, was aboard the whaleship Mentor when it was wrecked. Only about half the crew survived the wreck; they were ultimately captured by natives, who tattooed, starved, and mistreated their prisoners. Holden and his friend Nute were rescued in 1834 by the British barque Britannia...? Hill 818 (revised edition).
