Bookseller?s label on front wrapper and slight toning, else near fine. Early 19th century Edinburgh was a hub of modern medical research, and as such, cadavers were often in short supply. In 1827, anatomist Dr. Robert Knox paid ?7 10s to William Burke and William Hare for the corpse of a lodger who had suddenly died in Hare?s house; over the next 10 months, the two would murder an additional 15 people, selling each body to Knox.
