FOX, Paul (Paul Fuchs, 1898 ? 1976). Portrait of Magician Paul Fox. Chillcothe, OH: Hathaway, ca. 1920. Silver gelatin half-length portrait of the inventive magician and designer of classic magic apparatus, shown holding a magic wand. In photographer?s printed window display folder, approximately 8 x 5?. An early and handsome portrait of the magician Dai Vernon considered one of his closest friends and confidants, this image was captured in Fox?s hometown, where his family owned and operated a jewelry and watch business. It was Fox?s design for the venerable Cups and Balls ? initially developed for his own use, and for use by his close friends in magic?s fabled ?inner circle? of the 1930s, that became the standard for virtually all models that would follow.
