Near fine. FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY GAINES ON THE TITLE-PAGE; LAID-IN IS A PUBLISHER?S PROMOTIONAL PHOTO OF GAINES, ALSO SIGNED BY HIM. This novel was adapted into a television film (1974) starring Cicely Tyson in the titular role (this film won many awards, including 9 Emmy Awards). Gaines was a critically acclaimed author, winning multiple awards, including the National Humanities Medal and Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
