London: Matthew Gillyflower [and] James Partridge, 1693. Folio. Illustrated with frontispiece portrait and 11 plates (some folding), some woodcuts in text. Title-page printed in red and black. [188], 1-[207], 1-80 pp. Bound in contemporary full mottled calf, boards double-ruled in blind, spine tooled in gilt in compartments, burgundy gilt morocco lettering label.

Condition

Binding worn, soiled, joints cracking, ffep. missing, frontispiece portrait a bit loose, previous owner's signature and marking on recto of frontispiece and rfep. (William Donch), bookplate of "Library Lilford" on fp. Text toned, soiled, some text leaves dampstained, some leaves more toned than others, some occasional edgewear, soiling in text. Very good. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, TWO VOLUMES IN ONE. Volume I in six books; volume II is Directions Concerning Melons. De La Quintinie was the director of fruit and kitchen gardens to Louis XIV - he was later ennobled by the king. Evelyn was a founding member of the Royal Society.
