GAS: A World War Chemical Warfare Training Archive. United States, Early to mid-20th century. A stark and visually compelling archive of photographs documenting chemical warfare training and preparedness during the First and Second World Wars.
The collection consists of numerous photographs, both formal and candid, all documenting the development, controlled testing, training protocols, and lived consequences of chemical weapons, and the individuals affected. Images reveal soldiers engaged in gas mask drills and training exercises; controlled and live-field explosions associated with chemical deployment; and unvarnished views of injuries sustained from gas exposure.
Accompanying the photographs are a dispersing of printed ephemera, including soldier received documents, military orders, clipped period news coverage, and personal letters, as well as a mandated GAS armband
An overall important primary-source record of chemical warfare.
Binder measures approx. 11 x 10."
Conditions vary throughout, though most photographs and printed ephemera show expected wear consistent with age.
