GEMMELL, David (1948-2006). The King Beyond the Gate. London: Century, 1985. 8vo. [x], 1-[309] pp. Publisher's black cloth lettered in gold in original unclipped ("£9.95") pictorial dust jacket. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING OF GEMMELL'S SECOND DRENAI NOVEL, SIGNED ON THE TITLE PAGE.

The King Beyond the Gate is Gemmell's second novel following Legend, published one year earlier, and set in the same fictional world. It resumes the narrative one century in the future. Though second in the Drenai series, this was Gemmell's first hardcover, Legend having been first published in paperback and not released in hardcover until the year following. The hardback edition was produced in a very limited run; Gemmell has signed the title page in ballpoint.
