[GEOLOGY]. WEBSTER, Dr. John W. A Description of the Island of St. Michael, Comprising an Account of Its Geological Structure? Boston: R. P. & C. Williams, 1821. 8vo. Illustrated with 2 folding maps, 1 folding table, 1 plate. 244 pp. Contemporary half morocco over marbled boards, rebacked with later brown cloth, gilt (boards worn, soiled, scuffed, later endleaves, text toned, soiled, some wear to folding plates, front blanks with inkstamp and embossed stamps). Good. FIRST EDITION OF THIS GEOLOGICAL STUDY OF ST. MICHAEL; WRITTEN BY A HARVARD PROFESSOR WHO LATER MURDERED A FELLOW PROFESSOR OVER A LOAN DISPUTE. In 1847, Webster borrowed $400 from George Parkman, securing the loan with a cabinet of minerals. When Webster gave these minerals to another party to secure a second loan, Parkman (understandably) became incensed. He confronted Webster, they argued, and Parkman disappeared. Parkman?s remains were discovered in Webster?s laboratory; after a sensational trial, Webster was convicted and later hanged. Measurements: 9 x 6 x 1?.
