George Washington: Free Frank Signed Envelope Panel Addressed to Governor George Clinton. 7" x 8 3/4" panel, addressed in Washington's hand "His Excelly Governor Clinton Private 13 Poughkeepsie Geo Washington". The panel is docketed "26th Nov. 1782 Letter from Genl. Washington Private".
Washington addressed the panel to New York's 1st Governor George Clinton while he was at his military headquarters in Newburgh, NY. The panel possibly enclosed this letter to Clinton, which was dated November 26, 1782, and reads:
"Newburgh 26th Novr 1782
Dear Sir,
Colo. Varrick delivered me your Excellency’s favor of the 22d. I thank you for the trouble you have taken to obtain information on the points we conversed at our last meeting. I have done the same—and still keep the matter full in view.
That the Enemy are about to make a detachment from New York does not admit of a doubt—but to what extent, or when it will take place is more uncertain. Four Regiments (British) will, I believe, certainly go. I am sincerely & Affectely Yr Excellys Most Obedt Servt
Go: Washington"
The British still occupied New York City in November 1782 when the Treaty of Paris was signed, and during peace negotiations.
Condition
Typical folds, Washington's signature a bit light at the "W", else fine. Certainly one of the rarest of all free franks.
