[GREAT CHICAGO FIRE] BARNARD, George N. Stereoscope Cards Showing the Aftermath Caused by the Great Chicago Fire. Chicago: Lovejoy & Foster, n.d. [ca. 1872]. 12 cards from the series Among the Ruins in Chicago (numbers 6-9, 11-18), photographed and published by G.N. Barnard. Images of ruined building remains of downtown Chicago include the Open Board Building, Chamber of Commerce, Fifth National Bank, and the Court House. Each with printed caption labels affixed to versos. Faint soiling or spotting to image area and versos. George Barnard was a renowned Civil War photographer who followed General Sherman on campaign, capturing the destructive aftermath of the ravaged battlefield. Barnard later lived in Chicago at the time the Great Fire broke out, managing to capture, again, the destructive aftermath caused by man.
