Written while his wife was pregnant with their first child, The Heritage of the Desert proved to be a massive bestseller and was later adapted into a 1932 motion picture starring Randolph Scott and directed by Henry Hathaway, who would go on to direct the classic westerns The Sons of Katie Elder and True Grit.
