GREY, Zane (1872-1939). Complete Holograph Manuscript of "The Rider by Zane Grey. A Western Romantic Play in Four Acts..." [N.p., ca. 1920s]. Folio. Written in pencil on ruled pages, rectos only. 181 loose pages. Pages approximately 12 1/2 x 8". THE COMPLETE HOLOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT OF GREY'S ONLY PLAY, SIGNED BY HIM ON THE TITLE-PAGE, BASED UPON GREY'S NOVEL, WILDFIRE (1917). Apparently, this play was never produced, making this manuscript unique.

On the first (title) page is the cast list ("Bostil," "Lucy," "Aunt Jane," "Creeds," et al.) The acts are numbered separately and are as follows: act I is pp. 2-57; act II is pp. 1-40; act III is pp. 1-48; act IV is pp. 1-36.

This play involves the strong willed Lucy Bostil, the headstrong and independent daughter of rancher Bostil. She desires freedom and adventure; she'll get her chance in an upcoming horse race, in which she'll ride the unpredictable horse, Wildfire.

Condition

Pages toned, with occasional minor creasing, soiling, marginal tears. Fine. Housed in modern brown cloth portfolio case (a few joints worn).
