GYSEL, Robert (1880 - 1938). Manuscript and Correspondence Explaining Tricks of Fraudulent Spirit Mediums. 1920s. Over 50 typed and manuscript pages, most on Gysel's printed 4to letterheads, with several pages crudely illustrated.

Gysel was a reformed spirit medium, an escape artist, and a magician. Included are 17 typed pages for a proposed treatise explaining the tricks of fake spirit mediums at Indiana's Camp Chesterfield (referred to as the "Chesterfield Cheaters") describing not only the layout and proceedings at the enclave, but mentioning and exposing many of the mediums and their tricks quite plainly. These include Mrs. Reichart, Evyline Burnsides, Mrs. Nichols, and many more.

The balance includes over 30 pages explaining individual fraudulent spirit effects, among them Gysel's methods for manifestations with trumpets, billets, flowers, handkerchiefs, as well as spirit rapping. A small sample gimmick for one rapping trick is included, as well as a candid photo of Gysel, and two pictorial advertising sheets bearing his Ripley's-like caricature portrait. A list of items from Gysel's collection (apparently written in his hand) is also included.

Robert Gysel supplied information on fraudulent mediums to Houdini for the latter's ongoing crusade against fraudulent mediums. Gysel was also quite knowledgeable about locks and restraints, and performed an array of grisly stunts, including the Needle Through Arm trick. The manuscript included in this archive is apparently unpublished. Its typed dedication is to fellow magician Al Synder of West Virginia.
