Engraved folding map frontispiece of the Niagara frontier + three intertextual woodcut plans (occasional offsetting from text and map). Later half calf over marbled boards, raised bands, compartments titled in gilt, top edge gilt (boards and corners rubbed, front board separating at joint, title page clipped at lower margin, bookplate and pocket removed, pale marginal dampstaining to few leaves). Howes H-62. Howes refers to this work as an ?unflattering description of American life and character.?
