Finca Vicia, San Francisco de Paula, Cuba, July 21st, 1957. On blue stationery laid-paper. 3 typed stanzas, signed by her at the bottom with a pencil drawing of a cat (she and Hemingway would refer to each other as "Kitten" or "Big Kitten" in personal correspondence). Approximately 8 x 6".

This affectionate and bawdy poem was found in a drawer (of private material) in Mary's New York apartment after the Kennedy Museum had removed what they wanted from her collection. At top "COPY) I wanted to make you a poem As strong and light as a malllard's wing To rise in grace and strength and Speak of one man's courage, The gallantry with which he puts A gentle face on near despair Of his gaiety and wisdom, The sense of comic always persevering, Of his long, lonely voyages Into space and past and future Of how he swims with fish And knows the mysteries of waiting As beasts know and the earth, Of how he rides a cloud, Or the sweet voice of a piccolo Soars with a phrase of magic to Antares or the clitoris Of his own secret land..."
