HEMINGWAY, Ernest (1899-1961). Autograph Letter Signed to Arnold Gingrich. Bimini, Wed. July 17 '35. 3 1/2 pages on two brown pages. Approximately 11 x 8 1/2". Toned, 2 vertical and 1 horizontal creases, some edgewear, soiling. Near fine. With original mailing envelope in Hemingway's hand. Addressed: "Dear Arnold:-" Signed "Best luck always, Ernest". Hemingway sends his best wishes to Gingrich who was suffering from whooping cough, which had prevented Gingrich from visiting Hemingway in Cuba.

Condition

Hemingway writes that he is thinking about going somewhere cooler "... to write for 2 - 3 months..." He then asks Gingrich to "hit that Key West organization for an ad. They have plenty of Gov't cash for publicity for this coming winter." Hemingway then complains about advertising revenues for Esquire Magazine "... Am sorry to see you so thin in advertising but so is everybody else in the summer - still you have that backlog of loss at the star instead of profit to fall back on - It's certainly tough - you get out a better issue each time - if your business end was even 1/3 as good as your editorial end you'd be a millionaire by now..." "On July 8 1918 I swore I would do ever god damned thing I could against war if I got through that night - and once a year anyway try to keep my promise - if you want an editorial disclaimer on it go ahead..."
