HEMINGWAY, Ernest (1899-1961). Signed Christmas Card and Related Archive. [V.p. ca. 1954-1992], including: parchment Christmas card printed in gilt and colors, housed in parchment slipcase printed in blue, slipcase signed by Hemingway in pencil: "Best luck Wemedge." Slipcase and colorful card approximately 8 x 5". In original mailing envelope addressed to Mr. and Mrs. William Smith in Arlington, VA with stamps and cancels (worn, soiled, some parts of card and slipcase partially sticking to each other). Good.
[Together with:] an autograph note signed by John Hadley Nicanor Hemingway (Ernest's eldest son) on an index card: "Wemedge was Papa's nickname among his post WWI Pals - especially up in Michigan. Bill Smith was Papa's best friend during that period. John Hadley Nicanor Hemingway." Approximately 3 x 5" (toned, soiled, glue residue on front and back).
[And:] autograph note unsigned (unknown hand) on index card: "Bill Smith was E. H.'s best friend for years. He was the model or Bill Gortin in The Sun Also Rises and married John Dos Passos' sister." Approximately 3 x 5" (toned, tape on upper and lower margins).
[And:] Christmas card from Jack and Angela Hemingway (1992), folded, with a photo of the Hemingways. Signed at bottom: "Hope everything going well - will be in Sun Valley Dec Feb March a 1/2 April. Hunto Ban botte [?] - Jack & Angela." Approximately 11 x 7", unfolded (worn, soiled, a few tears, 2 tape repairs).
[And:] typed letter signed to "Mr. Conrad" from Helen Tierney. On plain white paper. R D 2 Carmel, N?Y? 10512 27 July 1986. Approximately 9 x 6". (Creased, worn, soiled, tape on margins). In this letter, Tierney corrects Conrad about his article in Time Magazine, with information about this card, chastising him about his errors.
All housed in modern white binder with plastic sleeves. Offered with a copy of The Letters of Ernest Hemingway 1907-1922, edited by Sandra Spanier & Robert W. Trogdon, with more information about Hemingway's relationship with Bill Smith on pp. 304-307. An excellent archive. Measurements: 12 x 11 x 1".
